Universally Legal : My 21st BirthWeek Jump-start

I never felt disheartened about getting a year older. I don’t understand why people hide their age, even at their 20s. They seem to feel old year after year. Whenever I ask about someone’s age, the common response is being shy about giving their 2-digit age.

For me, each birthday is a wonderful blessing from our Heavenly Father. It must be celebrated! It doesn’t have to be “bongga” or glamorous. The important part here is to celebrate your birthday with the special people in your life.

My birthday is on January 23. This 2012, the date fell on a Monday, simultaneous with Chinese New Year. Last January 22 (Sunday), my family gave me a cute and funny birthweek (our other term for birthday) jumpstart. They blindfolded me in the car and told me it is the start of my birthweek surprise. Daydreams and imaginations ran through my mind while blindfolded. No clue at all on where they would bring me. All I could see was black. Until finally, the car stopped. Slowly stepped down the car since I was blindfolded and was in sky-high heels. Mom held my hand, hugged me tight and guided the way. The noisy background sound came to my surprise because it was not what I had in mind. No, we weren’t in a hotel, which I expected. After walking for about 2 minutes from the car, we arrived the real destination. Blindfold was removed and instantly smiled. The first stop was at theater of Resort’s World to watch Sound of Music, my ultimate childhood favorite!

No pictures of the play since it was not allowed. I was a chicken to attempt because they might confiscate my baby (camera).

*Fact: I’ve seen Sound of Music for more than 100x!

Immediately after the play, they brought me to Marriott Hotel for my birthday countdown.

Deep Fried Brie Cheese (Php 480) - My plate of brie cheese, strawberry jam plus farmer’s bread completed me already. Adding strawberry jam to brie cheese satisfied my taste cravings. Brie cheese as an appetizer is a better choice for me, than mozzarella cheese that is extremely cheese. Marmalade jam can also be an option to replace strawberry jam in case you want to improvise a similar dish on your own.

Food Series #2

On my first day in India, I planned to go out of the hotel and explore the city. It was in my goal for the day to try out authentic Indian cuisine along the streets. I was also imagining fish ball/squid ball stands like here in the Philippines. However, my mom didn’t allow me because we were told by the locals in the hotel that it is not safe to walk around alone, especially I am a foreigner. Due to this, I didn’t have any choice but to eat lunch in the hotel. Thanks to Room Service button! Haha!

What I ordered:

Country Style Fish & Chips: There were three big pieces of fish meat served. The fish meat was cooked well-done where you can taste how crispy and juicy the fish was. After chewing for several minutes, I’ve noticed that the battered fish was spread layered with spices. The Indian flavor can still be tasted in this English type of food. Combined with hot and big french fries, the main course was more than enough to satisfy my hunger.

Tiramisu: Served on a stainless steel glass, this Tiramisu was filled with cream and chocolate powder that can serve 1-2 persons. There is nothing great about their Tiramisu, only its size and presentation. It lacks flavor and unique taste. This dessert will taste better if there were more graham bits inside the cream filling.

Food Series #1

I, together with my mom, stayed in Royal Orchid Hotel for our first stop in India. The hotel looked clean and classic, at the same time the staff was very accommodating too. Our first meal in India was held in the hotel’s buffet breakfast. They served both English and Indian cuisine. Since Indian breakfast was new to me, I immediately asked the waiters to orient me with what the Indians usually eat for breakfast. One waiter advised me to try out their famous Dosa.

Dosa, a popular Indian dish, looked like a thin crispy pancake and was made from rice and black lentils. There are variations of Dosa, but what I tried is the plain Dosa with their special dip/flavoring. This dip tasted like mashed potatoes with spices, which is a perfect combination in eating Dosa.

For two straight mornings, I had Dosa as a starting meal in India. I am not an Indian cuisine fan, but this recipe is probably one of the reasons I would like to go back and eat in an Indian restaurant. It is a simple dish that you want to eat it over and over again.
