The opening of The Dessert Kitchen in Rockwell thrilled or might have intrigued many of us. Very direct with its name, you instantly understand the content of the restaurant’s menu. Basically, we are pointing a finger at (almost) everyone’s weakness, desserts.
A day before
The Dessert Kitchen (TDK) opened to the public, O and I had the privilege to get a taste of this
Hong Kong franchise by HTCG, the same team behind Lugang Cafe and
Tuan Tuan. HTCG loved the idea and concept, emphasizing on healthy desserts which do not concentrate on sweetness alone. I have a feeling there was quite a risk having in mind that Filipinos acquire naturally sweet palate.
The menu is a thick book of unique and familar sounding Asian-inspired desserts. Choosing was tough for a first timer! There are so much desserts and it was hard to make up my mind that easily.
Whoever visits Rockwell would know where the cinemas are. TDK is located on that same floor, right beside Fully Booked. It’s either you get your dessert fix before or after catching a movie.
The Food:

Cocoa Kiss (Php 168)
Rate: 5/5 |
Other desserts might be a hit or miss to your palate, but for anyone who proclaims to be dessert lovers will fall in love with Cocoa Kiss. A brown affair made up with coffee jelly, chocolate pearls. vanilla ice cream, chocolate ice cream, banana and cocoa crisps flaunted its sexiest taste that I can’t take my hands off it.

Ujikintoki Traditional Japanese Style Dessert (Php 258)
Rate: 4/5 |
Meanwhile, while O was too busy with Cocoa Kiss, I pulled this Ujikintoki Traditional Japanese Style Dessert closer to me. They say green is good for you. Well, matcha is green and I heard it’s good for me too! :p Green tea shaved ice, red bean, mini rice balls and red bean vanilla ice cream. Not the best matcha dessert I’ve tried but I’d say it’s healthy enough as a dessert.

Purple in Love (Php 258)
Rate: 5/5 |
Purple in Love gets the spotlight at The Dessert Kitchen. It broke the typical ingredients used in a dessert, concentrating on grapes as its main source of sweetness. It has real grapes, popping kyoho grape seaweed balls, grape shaved ice, mini rice balls (mochi) combined with taro mochi ice cream. Taste for yourself and you’ll understand why it’s an award winning dessert. Thank you TDK for introducing us to this dessert! Really worth the shot!

Sakura Warabi (Php 168)
Rate: 5/5 |
What a pretty sight! Sakura Warabi deserves the spotlight too, more like clicks from your camera to show the gorgeous creation meticulously pinned up together. All suited well together, sakura warabi kanten, sakura rice balls, brown sugar paste, red beans and soy bean powder in it. Finished a plate immediately without feeling bloated with sugar since Sakura Warabi is light and flawless in sweetness. Trust me, you’d want to order this dessert as well!

Kanten (Php 198)
Rate: 2/5 |
I had a hard time appreciating Kanten, where you mix the kanten or jelly noodles with the green tea milk (or your choice of sauce) and fresh ball-shaped mixed fruits. The kanten is slippery to eat when using your utensils. Plus, I wasn’t sold out to this idea.
|
Japadog (Php 258)
Rate: 4/5 |
To break the dessert marathon, we had this savory Japadog. Hong Kong style garlic eggette with hotdog, caramelized onions, drizzled with teriyaki mayonnaise and honey mustard, and seaweed strips on top. Now I miss Hong Kong street food!
The Ambiance:
Spacious for a restaurant serving 90% desserts. Gone are the days when you stereotype dessert hubs with colorful interiors like a kid’s playhouse. TDK opens their doors, giving you a clean and relaxing space while you indulge in their healthy desserts.
The kitchen is exposed as its main attraction, where the process is transparently seen by us, the consumers.
There are more desserts I wanted to try that same night but I guess I just have to save it for the next time. I left The Dessert Kitchen without feeling overdosed with sugar. No moment of regret for running a marathon of guilt-free desserts.
