If there is one dish Bagoong Club is proud of, that would be their Kare-Kare. Bagoong Club is nationally famous because of that dish. But before planning our Sunday lunch in Bagoong Club, I did some research about it first. The blogs I read had different opinions; some were recommending it, some were claiming that their Kare-Kare is way better. To kill that curiosity going on, the recent Sunday family lunch was scheduled in Bagoong Club.

They serve sliced singkamas together with the 2 Bagoong flavors while waiting for our order.
What is Bagoong Club without bagoong? Here are the two complimentary flavors: Bagoong Pag-ibig, sweet as how the name describes it, & Bagoong Umaga (blurry), slightly spicy because of little chili seeds on it. I was in love with Bagoong Pag-Ibig. Haha! That sounds strange but I really was. I had to ask the waiter for more of that FREE bagoong while waiting. Thank goodness, they were understanding enough that I was quite hungry. đ
I only order Bagoong Rice when Iâm at Thai restaurants. But since I was in Bagoong Club, I thought it would be a good choice to order.
Unfortunately, I was disappointed by how it turned out. I think there was a scarcity when it comes to its flavor. Forgive the adjective used, but even my parents agree. (They are bagoong lovers by the way, so I trust their taste buds)
Upon entering the restaurant, you would see awards saying they serve the BEST Kare-Kare in the Philippines. When I saw that, my expectations ascended to 2 scales higher. I already had in my mind that I would be tasting the best Kare-Kare on that same day.
Sad to say, it wasnât the BEST Kare-Kare. Nothing terrific about it. Well, their Kare-Kare was palatable, if you didnât have high expectations like me. The first spoon of eating it showed how creamy and peanut buttery the dish was. Whatâs more sad about it, there were more veggies, less meat. đ I love vegetables but I love meat more, especially for Kare-Kare. Homemade Kare-Kare still reigns for me.
Looking at the brighter side, the bagoong that compliments the Kare-Kare was not bad at all. In fact, I liked it. I imagined dipping crispy and extremely sour green mangoes with it. Ooohh yummy! đ
I couldnât say anything negative about the ambiance. Classy and homey, a familyâs type of atmosphere on Sundays. Classic and instrumental Filipino music serenaded us while eating.
See that? Similar to an ancestral home you usually visit on Sundays.
