There’s a new kid on the corner getting noticed by the
Makati crowd.
Friends from the Makati church I go to have been raving about this new restaurant near Kalayaan Ave. From left to right, I kept on hearing my friends, especially the ladies I see weekly, thrilled while mentioning the new restaurant that serves steak below P200. Through word of mouth, I was convinced to finally schedule my visit with the restaurant, Salt.
Like all restaurant owners, it all starts with a dream. For Salt’s all-men tandem, it started with a dream and a question. While eating out during one of their boys night outs, the trio had a sensible foodie question saying, why can’t they have decent steaks with rice that are affordable for everyone? These men had the appetite for steaks. For guys who want a piece of steak on their plates three times a day, opening up their own restaurant seemed to be the fearless solution.
Salt is a representation of these guys’ personalities in dealing with food. They opt to keep it simple and affordable. Well of course, the quality and quantity cannot be taken out. Like any other guy, Salt owners are still meticulous on how steaks are properly done. Good food and good price could be possible, in spite of being in the business district of Makati.

The Food:

T-Bone Steak (Php 190)

The best-selling T-Bone Steak of Salt. All the way from Batangas, the thick cut of steak was transported to Makati for grilling. Below P200 is music to the ears, most especially for Makati workers who value their budget on daily meals. I couldn’t compare their steaks to ‘marbled’ steaks I get from deli stores and steakhouses that specialize on steaks. Although I think Salt’s take on steaks doesn’t need too much judgment with its flavorings since they kept it simple, medium-cooked and juicy in every bite. One thing’s for sure, any man will raise his arm up, call the waiter and order extra rice. Oh, and don’t forget the camouflaged potato salad on the side while waiting for your extra rice.

Grilled Cajun Chicken (Php 180)

According to one of the owners Jobet, Grilled Cajun Chicken is his favorite. I was persuaded by his choice so I made an order as well. Grilled evenly with spices to add richness to the chicken’s meat and skin. Its salsa with corn, onions and tomatoes didn’t only accessorize the plate but completed the whole package of quality and affordable meal.

The Burger (Php 220)

The one and only burger called The Burger. Buns crowded with 100% beef patty, slices of tomatoes and onions, lettuce and 1 layer of cheese. First bite teased me to go ahead and make some more. Their homemade beef patty kept me quirky, adoring every bite from those juicy inch-sized patty. I don’t get why Salt limited their burger choice to 1. 🙁 Their patties need to be rolled out more on the menu for other combinations!
Yes, they’ve got potato wedges on the side. Deep fried potatoes exactly how I like my potatoes to be done.

Tartufo Ball (Php 130)

A chocolate ball of surprise. Truffle-like ball covered with cocoa powder and a surprise of cherry inside its belly.

Frozen Brazo De Mercedes (Php 110)

It’s been a long time since I had my slice of Frozen Brazo De Mercedes. For the record, it’s not the first time I’ve tried this type of dessert yet I still fall in love with every piece each time it enters my taste buds. Enchanting meringue and custard lingered that I can’t believe I finished a slice at the speed of light.
The Ambiance:
Call it hole in the wall restaurant because it is. At the corner of one of the streets near Kalayaan and Makati Avenue, you’ll find a moonlight of Salt logo calling you to enter and find a seat. For restaurants hidden from the main road, O and I are quite dependent on GPS or Google maps nowadays. We didn’t experience any inconvenience finding the lighted Salt sign using GPS.
