A typical foodie will be a little disappointed with Brunei’s restaurant culture after a week. Select choices, cuisines and spots to take on a tummy adventure. If you are you used to the Philippines, Metro Manila to be exact, with a multitude of restaurants opening week by week, culture shock will greet you in Brunei. Although, I gotta say you could choose your favorite spots among the small number of restaurants. I have some favorites, which I will share with you soon.
Despite its limited choices, there is one fast food restaurant that caught the taste buds of people from Brunei, standing still with a sea of customers any time of the day. No other than, our very own Jollibee!
The Filipino hearted me was so proud to enter doors of Jollibee and take a photo immediately, before lining up at the counter. At the branch near the Grand Mosque, the Jollibee crew was mostly Bruneians.
As I ordered, I made it a point to include my Jollibee usuals – Spaghetti and Chicken Joy.
The Food:
Chicken Joy Bucket ($ 6.00) Rate: 4/5 |
A bucket of Chicken Joy! Weee!! I already knew what to expect, coming from an avid fan of Jollibee’s chicken. Its skin has the exact taste of Philippine’s version of Chicken Joy. Going deeper into the skin, the meat part, I would say it’s less juicy as to what I’m used to. Chicken Joy in the Philippines is much much better! 🙂
Pita Sandwich ($ 4.75) Rate: 4/5 |
Pita Sandwich with chicken fillet and vegetables, only available in Brunei. A ‘Twister’ (KFC product) style sandwich that uses a thin delicate pita bread. This is a product I wish Jollibee Philippines would have.
Creamy Carbonara ($ 3.00) Rate: 4/5 |
Do you recall if we had Carbonara in Jollibee Philippines? I don’t remember any.
Well, its has a lot to do with creaminess of white sauce and generous bacon chops and mushrooms as toppings to the Creamy Carbonara.
Spaghetti Meal ($ 3.50) Rate: 3/5 |
Forget about sweetness and the large chunks of hotdog. Jollibee Spaghetti in Brunei left its sweetness in the Philippines. The version I tried was in the middle of Filipino style and Italian style.
Double Cheese Fries ($ 2.50) Rate: 5/5 |
I need these Double Cheese Fries in the Philippines!
Melted cheese and grated cheddar cheese on Jolly Fies that meets sweetness and saltiness together. Leaning more on the sweetness side, I’d still buy a box if they have Double Cheese Fries here in the country!
The Ambiance:
I said hi to some Filipino workers. Feels like home in any Jollibee branch across my own country.
My Brunei food and travel adventure isn’t done yet.
